Why do we teach fly casting
asThe core of fly fishing is fly casting because the cast is the action that carries your fly to the fish.
It must follow that the more water you effectively and efficiently cover, the more times you show your fly to the fish, the more fish you are going to catch.
The pre-requisite for success is understanding the principles of fly casting, as developed according to Gary Borger...” The Perfect Cast I". Jason Borger's book " Single-Handed Fly Casting". This book develops conceptually the foundation casting stroke and develops the cast to becoming an effective caster.
You must develop muscle memory and the knowledge and ability to cast in different ways and under different circumstances and conditions.
To become a successful fly caster you must also apply the Three “P”s; Practice, Patience and Persistence.
As a fly casting Instructor I have researched and learned from some of the best fly casters in the world. I have worked and taught with Gary Borger (formally IFFF advisor for Casting Instructors) as well as taking classes from (Nationally known) Mel Kreiger and Joan Wolff.
Having been a life long educator and presenter in Education and now fly fishing, I found that scaffolding skills is the most effective method in teaching. Casting skills are no different. By building skill upon skill and teaching students how to reflect on their casting successes and failures, they will become confident and successful casters. The following skills are those that we build on.
